De Steenen Beer is a unique hydraulic engineering monument. The inundation lock De Steenen Beer south of Graauw was built in 1784. The lock is part of the Staats-Spaanse Linies, a system of defenses that was built in what is now Zeeuws-Vlaanderen from the sixteenth century.

Just outside Zandberg (a hamlet along the road from Hulst to Graauw) lies Fort Het Boerenmagazijn in the dike of the Willem Hendrikspolder. Near the fort, at the bottom of the dike over which the Beerweg runs, two dark cavities are hidden. These are two lock shafts of a former inundation lock. Such a sluice was intended to allow water to flow into an area and to flood it. Flooding is the deliberate inundation of land to prevent or delay an enemy's advance.
