The Dukla Pass, the lowest and most convenient for communication in the Carpathians, became the site of two huge battles during the First and Second World Wars in the 20th century. To this day, the wooded hills and valleys around Dukla are covered with a great number of military monuments, which are the remnants of past battles fought by hundreds of thousands of German, Austrian, Hungarian, Russian, Czechoslovak and Soviet soldiers.

Already in 1964, an exhibition devoted to the battle of autumn 1944 was opened in the Dukla palace - most of the military items on display were donations and purchases from local residents penetrating the Dukla battlefield. Then, the museum exhibition was supplemented with transfers from military units, purchases from collectors and finders, and deposits from the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw. (...)
