Pulau Merah beach was originally known as Ringin Pitu. Its name is derived from the red colour of the rock on the island and the reflection of the receding sea water when it was hit by dusk sunshine.
Pulau Merah / Red Island contains precious metal porphyry (copper, gold, molybdenite deposit). The porphyry was formed 4-8 Mio years ago at a depth of 2000-6000 m, when the volcano was still active. About 3-4 Mio years ago was a catastrophic eruption that caused an almost complete collapse of the volcano. Later the volcano activity stopped, and the process of erosion occurred. The resistant volcanic rock was too hard to erode and became the island, Pulau Merah.
