Baluran National Park in Situbondo, East Java has a natural savannah – the Bekol Savana. It is so unique that it was nicknamed "Little Africa van Java". The savannah ecosystem is inhabited by large mammals such as Javanese banteng (Bos javanicus), wild buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), and Javanese deer (Rusa timorensis).
The Baluran central savannah ecosystem is threatened by the invasive species Vachellia nilotica (Gum Arabic Tree) that has caused the destruction of various types of grass, the main component of the savannah.
