The temple has its origin in the apparition on August 5, 1227 of the Virgin to a shepherd in that same place. The building that we find today is the result of the transformation of the old hermitage. The interior is decorated with paintings by Francisco Carulla and Francisco Baños.

Tradition tells us that the Virgin appeared to the shepherd Juan Jiménez in 1227, although more recent research places the event in 1236.
