The former main building of the station is a fine example of the iron architecture typical of the industrial and functional buildings of the second half of the 19th century. Due to its properties and ability to support heavy loads and to span large areas, iron prevailed over traditional building materials (stone and brick). Glass, used on walls and roofs, was very suitable for obtaining light and translucent structures.
The main façade, facing the station square, corresponds to a tripartite structure, with the central and most important part built with the two most typical materials of the new architecture: iron and glass. At the entrance to the building, a huge stained glass window was created as a monumental portico, suitable for welcoming travelers who used this new means of transport. Stone and brick, coated with glazed ceramic, were used on the sides.
