Hiking
The Schwedenhöhlen - also called Schwedenlöcher - are located in the reed forest. These are caves dug in loess.
A legend tells that they were built during the Swedish wars in the 17th century as hiding places for the residents of the surrounding villages, shortly before the Swedish general Torstenson occupied the town of Korneuburg. But there are also reports of Hussites, Turks and Hungarians, and some even associate the caves with old places of worship or fortifications on the nearby hill on which Kreuzenstein Castle stands.
The caves are accessible; inside there are sometimes very impressive rooms.
