With the independence of Croatia in 1991, there was an open aggression of Serbia on Vukovar and Croatia. After the majority of the Serbian population (all Serbian children) fled the city, the battle for Vukovar began in which the Croatian forces defended the city against the JNA army, Serbian Chetniks and other paramilitary units that had a huge superiority in manpower and technology. Serbian shelling razed the city to the ground. After three months of fierce fighting, Vukovar fell into Serbian hands on November 18, 1991.

In the aggression against Vukovar in 1991, the JNA and Serbian paramilitary units killed at least 1,739 people.
