Top cycling routes to Lower Danube Bastion (Werk XXIV)

Tips

  • The bastion was built between 1845 and 1855 under Major von Völker, the defensive barracks under Lieutenant Sunday and summed up to 1,611 men. It consists of a three-sided wall with a hollow cross-beam on the Saillant, the Escarpe with a caponniere on the left shoulder, a very strong Bonnet casemate in Saillant and a Halbcaponniere on the right shoulder. In the throat is the big defensive barracks. The Wallenden were bricked and provided with powder magazines. In front of the factory was a wet ditch.

  • Well-preserved historical building from earlier times and located directly on the Danube. Beautiful to look at with a great setting.

  • Not much of Work XXIV (Lower Danube Bastion) is visible here. A connecting wall ran from it to the Danube Tower (Work XXV), located here directly on the bank and next to the bike path. The Danube Tower now houses a youth club. In an emergency, an iron chain was supposed to be stretched across the Danube here. atarimuseum.de/festung/ul25.html
