Chandni Chowk (literally: Moonlight Square) is a street market and one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi, India. Near Old Delhi Railway Station, on the eastern edge of Chandni Chowk, stands the Mughal-era Red Fort. It was built in 1650 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and designed by his daughter Jahanara. The street running through the market was historically crisscrossed by canals designed to reflect moonlight. These canals have since been decommissioned, fundamentally altering the cityscape. Chandni Chowk remains one of India's largest wholesale markets.
