The former town school/Ald Weishoès was built in 1611 and completely renovated in 1926. It is a national monument of the Netherlands.

The ALD Weishoês (Old Orphanage), an early 17th century national monument built in Gelderland Renaissance style, is on the corner of Grote Kerkstraat and Kleine Kerkstraat in Venlo.

In the first few years a Latin school was founded. This only remained in the building until 1619, after which it passed into the hands of the Crosiers, who from that year gave lessons in their monastery. It is unknown who came into the building afterwards, but it is known that the municipal school was located there from 1680 to 1883, with the school for the poor in the basement.

In 1885 the building was purchased by the bourgeois Godshuizen, an institution that treated with care for the poor and the sick, and an established guest house there. The bourgeois almshouses already owned the adjoining orphanage, which was also built in 1577. In 1820 the institution also built a retirement home. The bourgeois almshouses therefore had a large complex. This complex was expanded several times on the area behind it. However, this was not enough, because in 1907 the board of the poor houses planned to partially demolish the complex and build a new building there. These plans failed.

In 1926 there was a comprehensive restoration combined with a new building. The name Ald Weishoes has since been used for the entire corner complex, but is fundamentally wrong. After the purchase by the bourgeois almshouses, only orphans lived in the corner house for a short time. The old orphanage is actually the building next door.

In 1599 Peter van Broeckhuysen and his wife cum suis also donated the Voewinckel farm in Broekhuizen to the orphanage. This dish was nicknamed De Wezenhof (now called De Vonkel).

The building is currently not in use, but will be renovated by 2022.

On the corner where the Grote Kerkstraat, Kleine Kerkstraat and Sint Martinusstraat meet opposite the Basilica of St. Martinus in the Limburg town of Venlo is the early 17th century Ald Weishoès (old orphanage) complex. However, the eponymous orphanage from 1577 is located in the neighboring house, which was only merged with the extensive renovation of the complex in 1926.

The building was originally built in 1611 in the Gelderland Renaissance style as a Latin school and was operated as such until 1619. After that it became the property of the Order of the Holy Cross, who also taught there. Unfortunately, it is not known how long the order used the school, but there is evidence that the city maintained the city school here between 1680 and 1883 with the poor school in the basement.
