The Church of St. Laurentius, a towering neo-Gothic parish church, is the focal point of the parish of Gundheim and is visible from afar across the landscape.

    About history:

Church life in our parish is steeped in history. The first small St. Martin's church is mentioned in a deed of donation in favor of the Lorsch monastery dated April 12, 791.

Around the year 1150 the first larger Romanesque Laurentius church was probably built on the same “church hill” (like all subsequent Gundheim churches).

In 1496 the Gundheim church was described as a Gothic church (2nd Laurentiuskirche), which was severely damaged in the turmoil of the Peasants' War in 1525. The third Laurentius church was built in the first half of the 16th century under the rule of the "Knights of Oberstein". During the Thirty Years' War and the decades that followed, the church became a dilapidated ruin again.

Between 1731 and 1734, a new building was erected by the "Barons von Greiffenclau" for the approximately 400 Catholics in Gundheim. This now larger 4th Laurentiuskirche was a simple Renaissance building from the outside, but the interior design was magnificent Baroque.

After more than 150 years, the church fell victim to a devastating fire on August 22, 1896 and could no longer be saved.

After a short period of depression, the people of Gundheim took courage and planned to rebuild their church, which was carried out between 1900 and 1902. Many unnamed hard-working hands who helped free of charge and the firm will to build their own church make this church something very special.
