The gate was built as a triumphal arch of victory over the Ottomans in 1716.

The street was named after one of Helmstedt's medieval city gates, the Magdeburger Tor (also called Ludgeri Gate, Kloster- or Osterthore), which led to this arterial road. [1] During construction work on the Magdeburger Straße, the archaeologist Jörg Weber on April 29, 2010 parts of the old Helmstedt city gate Magdeburger Tor (also called Ludgeri Gate, monastery or Osterthore) released. He photographed the eastern counterpart to the Hausmannsturm, since the area was subsequently filled in again. [2] In January 2012, the city of Helmstedt received 25,000 euros in funding from the Lebendige Stadt Foundation. These are to be used to have the railway underpass at the Magdeburger Tor sandblasted this year.
