    KL Auschwitz-Birkenau sub-camp in Kobiórze
During World War II, from September 1942 to August 1943, a sub-camp of KL Auschwitz-Birkenau (Oświęcim-Brzezinka) operated here.
The area was fenced off with a barbed wire fence. There are 4 watchtowers in the outside corners of the fence. Three wooden barracks for 150 prisoners and 20 SS men were built on the square.
Most of the prisoners of the sub-camp were Jews, mainly from Poland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, as well as several Germans, Poles and Russians.
They worked on clearing the forest, repairing forest roads, demolishing old houses and farm buildings, as well as digging ditches and spreading lime in the nearby meadows.
The preserved documents show that at least 21 prisoners died or were shot there. After the sub-camp was dissolved, the remaining exhausted people were transferred to Auschwitz, and from the fall of 1943, British prisoners of war took their place. They were employed in the sawmill in Kobiór and loading wood at a railway siding.
A stone obelisk commemorating the presented facts from the history of Kobiór, was placed in the place of the entrance gate to the sub-camp.
