St. Gangulf Chapel / Gangulf Chapel, Einsiedeln
The Chapel of St. Gangulf was built under Abbot Embrich in 1031. It is therefore the oldest surviving building in Einsiedeln. The chapel was built on the old pilgrimage route (Jakobsweg) as the last stop before visiting the monastery church and the chapel of grace. A special feature of the chapel was the originally missing main portal on the west side. Pilgrims entered the chapel through a northern portal and exited through the southern side.
In the Middle Ages and the Baroque period, the chapel was restored and redesigned several times. In 1798 it was damaged by French troops. It was not until 1814 that a comprehensive restoration took place and the chapel was rededicated. Archaeological investigations took place in 1942-44 and the chapel was restored to its supposedly “medieval” condition.
The parish of Einsiedeln celebrates a Eucharistic celebration in the chapel on the commemoration day of St. Gangulf (May 11).
