The Romanesque church of Blaton is one of the oldest in Hainaut and the only one in Wallonia dedicated to all saints. Its construction dates from the early eleventh century. Once lower and smaller, it has been profoundly transformed over the centuries. But the last restoration (1953 - 1963) has kept its original purity. The building was listed as a monument in 1948.
The square cross tower dating from the fourteenth - fifteenth century is very slim (24 meters) for a Romanesque building. The spherical spire of the bell tower, added in the fifteenth century, measures 14 meters.
When you enter through the gable door, you will see the Gothic niches on the right, near the baptismal foundations.
(1490-1877): elements of an old "theothèque" or ogival tabernacle, fine white stone sculptures and statues of Saints Peter and Paul.
The nave consists of two rows of columns where sandstones alternate (Granglise) and blue stones (Basècles).
The pointed arches reflect a period of transition between Romanesque and Gothic and are topped by semicircular windows hollowed out but slightly offset (only openings before enlargement of the building).
The so-called "Tournai" capitals are decorated with ribbed leaves (palms or hearts). The wooden frame has been restored and partially replaced: twelve new beams for ten old ones on the central ceiling. Below the bell tower, in the center of four powerful pillars, the altar under a vault is quite exceptional in the region (dome on pendentives or vault in cul-de-four).
The transept, also original, is barrel-vaulted, characteristic of the Scaldian Romanesque style.
The choir, formerly in Gothic style is smaller, was rebuilt at the end of the nineteenth century in Romanesque Revival style. Re-plastered, it accentuates the difference from the primitive elements stripped and marked. At the end of the choir is a beautiful wooden crucifix (fifteenth century) with the symbols of the four evangelists at quadrangular ends.
In the right aisle, near the altar of All Saints, hangs an imposing painting by a regional painter (1837), depicting the Communion of All Saints. The reliquary of Saint Fortunat was donated to the church in 1732 and contains several relics of Roman and other martyrs.
Last notable elements: Saint Christopher and Saint Roch, polychrome wooden statues of the fifteenth.
