    Hiking

Malmsmead is at the very heart of Doone Country right on the border between Devon and Somerset.

The medieval packhorse bridge and ancient ford cross the Badgworthy River and it is from here that you can easily access the Doone (or Badgworthy) Valley.

There are public toilets and a tea room here so it makes the perfect place to start and/or finish a walk.

The hamlet is full of connections to RD Blackmore's 'Lorna Doone', including Lorna Doone Farm and a memorial to Blackmore a short way up the valley.

Doone Valley loop from Malmsmead — Exmoor National Park

    250m

The Doone Valley loop from Malmsmead offers a moderate hiking experience through the heart of Exmoor National Park. This 9.7-mile (15.5 km) loop involves 821 feet (250 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes to complete. You'll traverse varied terrain, from an initial steep climb on a lane to natural dirt paths through ancient woodlands and expansive moorland. Follow Badgworthy Water, a small river, and enjoy tranquil fields, spotting grazing sheep and Exmoor Ponies. The route offers views over Brendon Common and the East Lyn Valley, but be prepared for sections that can be muddy, so sturdy footwear is essential.

The hike begins and ends in Malmsmead, where you'll find a car park, a cafe, and public toilets nearby. Be prepared for sections of the path that can be narrow, uneven, and particularly muddy, especially after rain or in winter. You might encounter small electric fences in farmland areas and need to cross footbridges. The river paths are vibrant with lush greenery in summer, and you might even spot salmon heading upstream. A good level of fitness is recommended for this moderate route.

This area is famously known as "Doone Country," serving as the inspiration and setting for R.D. Blackmore's 1869 novel, "Lorna Doone." Along the trail, you can discover the deserted medieval village of Badgworthy, believed to be where the fictional Doone family lived. Look for remnants of "Lorna's Cott" at Hoccombe Combe and a memorial to R.D. Blackmore. The National Trust has acquired much of this wild and beautiful area, ensuring its preservation for future hikers. You'll also pass a 17th-century packhorse bridge over Badgworthy Water in Malmsmead.
