It was precisely in these areas that, in 1902, Antonio Baroni, the famous mountain guide from Sussia, accidentally spotted a stone with very particular traces during a walk.

Realizing its importance, he collected it and handed it over to Don Enrico Caffi, a naturalist from San Pellegrino Terme, who later became director of the Civic Museum of Natural Sciences of Bergamo, named after him.

The scholar recognized in that "stone" a fossil fish, five centimeters long, perfectly preserved, the "pholidophore", an extinct bony fish that lived in the Upper Triassic (about 210 million years ago).

In honor of Don Caffi the fossil, now preserved in the Civic Museum of Natural Sciences of Bergamo, took the name of "Pholidophorus Caffi".

Descending from Sussia to 979 m above sea level. there is the small village of Vettarola, characteristic with its small square and the road underpass created in the middle of a farmhouse.
