St. Nicholas Church in Burg, today the island's main town, was built around 1230 during the transition period from Romanesque to Gothic architecture.

Individual construction phases are clearly visible in the three-aisled, vaulted hall church. The three western bays of the nave, the visible round-arch frieze below the roof, and the round-arch windows visible in the masonry are among the oldest parts of the church. They were replaced by Gothic pointed-arch windows in a later construction period.

During the late Gothic construction phase in the 15th century, the building was extended to the east. The central nave and side aisles were raised and widened. The different roof heights reveal these changes.

In the third construction phase, starting in 1505, the central and side aisles received a sixth bay. A semicircular altar niche was added here. The mortuary, added to the northern fifth bay in 1506, is now used as a prayer room.

The reconstruction of the square bell tower falls into the third construction phase. Like the altar niche, it was built from roughly hewn granite blocks. During a severe storm in 1760, the 29-meter-high spire shattered. Three years later, the tower received its Baroque spire with an octagonal lantern. The current tower height is 48 meters.

Since the interior furnishings have largely been preserved, true art treasures can be viewed today in St. Nicholas Church: Along with the main altar, the St. Blaise Altar is one of the church's most important sights.

The winged altar in the late Gothic style was erected in 1513. The wood-carved figures of saints from the 15th and 16th centuries are of art-historical significance.

A hexagonal Gothic bronze baptismal font from 1391 is shaped like a chalice and is of Lübeck origin.

On the right of the church there is a sloping, quaint little house with sloping doors and windows, there is a public toilet
