One of the many tribes in Tanzania is the Maasai tribe. They live in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. It is believed that around a million people belong to this tribe. They lead a semi-nomadic way of life and earn their living by trading cattle and selling jewelry and animal products.

It is believed that the Maasai have been around since the 15th century and have lived in East Africa ever since. In the 19th century, the image of the warlike Maasai was established, as they occupied many areas and drove out other peoples. They raided caravans and threatened the local population. The average Maasai lives in a hut made of mud and cow dung, but spends a lot of time away from home. They drive their herds, which represent their social status and prestige at the same time, through the dry areas of Tanzania to find water sources for the animals. A "good" Maasai owns about 50 cattle and usually divides them into smaller herds, which are often led by other family members.
