The tunnel was begun in 1893 and inaugurated on July 17, 1897. It is 367 meters long and is placed at a height of 1488 meters above sea level. The excavation work, done entirely by hand on compact and very hard rock, employed teams of miners on both sides, with shifts even at night, for four years in the periods from April to November, with the help of numerous local women to services and supplies. The miners stayed in the shelters built nearby, while the women returned to the houses of Rosazza, facing strenuous journeys every day. On 8 September 1895 the teams from the two blocks met at the expected altitude and in perfect alignment. In 1896-97 the section was enlarged to bring it to the useful width of 4.50 meters and a lateral height of 2.25 meters and a central height of 4.50 meters of the final profile. On July 17, 1897, the road platform of the tunnel was completed with the laying on the pavement of 720 meters of stone slabs and with the formation of the cobblestones and side gutters.
