Alpine Pasture History
Since 1851, the Tauernalm has belonged to the Oberleiterhof farm in St. Peter. The farm's alpine pastures were farmed at different times of the year: the Lower Tauernalm in early summer, the Upper Tauernalm in midsummer, and the Upper Stable in late summer. In 1921, the stable of the Upper Tauernalm was rebuilt. At that time, it provided space for 13 milking cows,
9 young cattle, 8 calves, 30 goats, and 4 pigs.Fourteen years later, in 1935, the alpine hut was built. Young cattle and goats were rounded up in mid-May, with the remaining cattle following two weeks later. The cattle drive down from the mountain pastures took place between late October and early November, depending on the weather. In 1964, the stable was completely destroyed by an avalanche, and 12 years later, the alpine hut of the Lower Tauernalm was completely destroyed. The buildings were not rebuilt, and the cattle have since been herded directly to the Obere Tauernalm.
In March 2000, an avalanche buried the buildings of the Obere Tauernalm. The stable was completely destroyed and the alpine hut was severely damaged. This event changed the management of the alpine pasture: from then on, only young cattle were herded, and the production of milk, cheese, and butter on the pasture came to an abrupt end.
The alpine hut was renovated in 2006. After many discussions and years of planning, the access road to the pasture was built in 2015, and the stable was rebuilt in 2016.
