The fortress is largely dilapidated and a lost place. It has a long history. Since the 19th century, it served as a barracks. During the German occupation from 1914 to 1918 and from 1940 to 1944, it served as a prison. Right at the entrance, there are several memorials to the Belgian victims of the German occupation.
