insel-scharfenberg.deThe island Scharfenberg has a school arm with high school and boarding school
August 12, 2018
Scharfenberg is an approximately 20.2-hectare island in Tegeler See in Berlin. A car ferry connects Scharfenberg with the mainland just a few meters away on the Schwarzen Weg (to Tegelort). The island has an elongated shape with north-south orientation (about 1000 m × 420 m), with the ferry terminal located near the northern tip.
The name of the island can be traced back to a former name for the approximately twelve meter high dune at its northern tip, the so-called Bolleberg. On a map from the 18th or 19th century it is referred to as "Scharffer Berg" and was probably a landmark for fishermen sailing on Lake Tegel as an orientation aid.
The island is best known for the school farm Insel Scharfenberg, founded in 1922 by Wilhelm Blume. The school is a state all-day grammar school with an attached boarding school and external students.
According to the Environmental Atlas 2006, the island has nine inhabitants.
