Charlemont, perched on a rocky outcrop, in the heart of the Pointe de Givet Nature Reserve, overlooks the Meuse and its surroundings.

In the 1550s, Givet was a border land, bordered by three sovereign states: the Kingdom of France, the Spanish Netherlands and the episcopal principality of Liège. It was to the latter that the town of Givet was then attached, and more particularly to the Seigneurie d'Agimont of Louis de Stolberg.

However, during this period, the situation between Henry II, King of France, and Charles V, Emperor of the Holy Empire, was particularly tense. In 1554, Henry II launched a vast attack against the Spanish Netherlands. His troops ravage everything in their path. The castles of Binche and Mariemont, residences of Marie of Hungary, sister of Charles V, fell, thus compromising the security of the borders.

This is why Charles Quint acquired, through his sister, the Seigneurie d'Agimont on April 6, 1555, and launched the construction of a new stronghold, able to protect the area, on the shore. left of the Meuse. Charles V gives its name to this fortress: Charlemont, the Mont de Charles.
