The castle park Weitmar invites you to a small journey into the past.

Already in the 11th century a farm was mentioned in the castle park Weitmar, from which in the second half of the 15th century, the first manor house Weitmar was created. In 1592 Johann von Hasenkamp built a manor house from Ruhr sandstone whose ruin can still be seen today.

On the occasion of the Capital of Culture year, the non-profit foundation Situation Kunst with the support of the EU, the state and the city of Bochum erected a four-storey glass cube in the ruins of the Weitmar house. The building serves to expand the artistic offer in the public park Weitmar. The cube intended for cultural events, working and discourse rooms, teaching and temporary exhibitions also provides permanent protection for the listed building Ruin Haus Weitmar.

Also around the time of the 11th century, the Sylvester Chapel was built. First mentioned in 1397, the building underwent a varied history. After it was expanded in 1464 initially to a branch church of the Catholic Stammpfarre Bochum, it changed in the course of the Lutheran Reformation to a Protestant church. Unfortunately, the Herrenhaus and Sylvester Chapel were destroyed by an air raid in May 1943 down to the outer walls.

The castle park has preserved several, in part centuries-old trees. These natural monuments with bizarre treetops and tree trunks invite you to take a leisurely stroll through the park.
