The royal spa garden in Bad Reichenhall, laid out in 1868, is almost 39,000 square meters in size and, in addition to native plants, also houses numerous exotic plants from Asia and North America as well as over 42 tree species. The spa garden contains the graduation house, the Atlas fountain, a music pavilion, a Kneipp pool and a playground. The park is framed by the Royal Kurhaus, the foyer with drinking pavilion and concert rotunda, and the Kurmittelhaus.

On May 15, 1846, the Achselmannstein sanatorium opened, which was located in the immediate vicinity of the graduation towers. A park designed in the English style also belonged to Bad Achchelmannstein, which invited guests to go for walks, while the neighboring graduation houses served as an open-air inhalatorium for so-called brine vapor baths, where the salty air could be inhaled.

Between 1869 and 1888 most of the graduation houses were demolished. A 170-metre section was left standing so that it could continue to be used for spa purposes. The graduation houses had proven to be indispensable for the spa business because they were very popular and frequented by the guests and had therefore developed into a popular meeting place. The area around the graduation houses was therefore gradually landscaped in the 1850s. Walkways were laid out, benches set up and a fountain with a brine fountain installed.

The AlpenSole fountain, one of the 55 fountains in downtown Bad Reichenhall, bubbles in front of the graduation house in the royal spa garden. Comfortable deck chairs around the fountain invite you to linger and relax. The fine mist of brine is especially refreshing and cooling on hot days.
