Owned by the National Trust, the mill (pump), built in 1855, is in the process of being restored. It should be fully functional by autumn 2018. Helpful and friendly volunteers are keen to share their knowledge about the mill.
It was used to pump water from the drainage ditches which are below sea level up into the river.
In the 19th century there were about 250 of them, now only 4 are left, having been replaced by far more efficient (and less romantic) electric pumping stations.
The pump would have been manned by a marsh man and his boy 24/7.

Stopped here on the Norwich 60/100 rode, were inundated by customers but they coped superbly. Lovely place to stop, take the weight off and stretch while indulging in coffee and a cake.
