On the banks of the Main, along the historic city wall, are the remains of the “Palatium”, the Hohenstaufen imperial palace, which was built in 1187/88 as a hunting or residential palace. After the decline of the Staufer, the so-called “Red Castle” served the citizens as a quarry. Only the eastern long side of the building remained thanks to its inclusion in the city wall.
