Matavun is a small village in the municipality of Divača, near the entrance to the Škocjan Caves in the Primorska region. Part of the Škocjan educational trail passes through the village.

In the middle of the village there is a kal, a shallow pond with an impermeable bottom, where rainwater collects. Not far away, there used to be an ice rink, underground spaces for storing ice. On the other side stands a large Linden tree, which people have worshiped since ancient times. Slovenians have a linden leaf as their symbol. Across the road is the NOB monument for fallen fighters.

Josip Jože Cerkvenik lived in the village of Matavun and was one of Škocjan's cavers who, with candles, oleanders or carbidkas, poorly lit, researched, built and guided visitors in the cave. It is responsible for the reputation of the Škocjan Caves and their exceptional cultural heritage, which is intertwined with the natural wonders of the area.

…an impressive natural spectacle and rightly a UNESCO World Heritage Site 👀

Beautiful little village. But very touristy.
