The mighty Risnik sinkhole is a special karst landmark.
The picturesque sinkhole, located less than 500 meters south of the railway station in Divača, was created by the collapse of the ceiling of the former cave hall. Its formation is connected with the former underground flow of the River Reka, which changed direction and today runs much deeper. The average diameter of the sinkhole is 220 meters, and its average depth is 72 meters. The bottom of the sinkhole is quite level, scree rises towards the perimeter, which transitions into high cliff walls towards the top. The rock perimeter is interrupted only in one place, where we can descend along the scree to the bottom of the sinkhole. Many birds find shelter in the cliff walls, and specific vegetation thrives in the Risnik valley due to the temperature inversion. The interesting Karstological and natural history educational trail Divaški Karst is led around the sinkhole, which presents the most characteristic features of this natural area. You can also walk along this path to Divaška jama, where you can also observe underground karst phenomena.
