The Asian-style elephant gate gives the zoo a New York city flair. In the midst of traffic, shopping centers and hotels, the two reclining elephants made of light sandstone shine like an oasis. The original entrance area dates from 1898 and 1899. At that time, the portal also included an administration building, apartments for zoo employees and other outbuildings. Today, the ticket offices and the zoo shop are located here, among other things. The construction costs of the facility at the time amounted to 277,336 marks. In November 1943, the facility was completely destroyed in a bombing raid. From 1983 to 1985, the elephant gate was reconstructed - the outbuildings were simplified, however, and the fence system was slightly modified. Today, the gate with its elephants is one of the most popular photo motifs in the City West. Have you ever taken a photo here?

The Elephant Gate is one of two main public entrances to the Zoological Garden in Berlin. It is on Budapester Strasse in the Tiergarten district of the Mitte district, in the immediate vicinity of the Zoo-Aquarium. Built between 1983 and 1984 in the East Asian style, the gate takes its name from two life-size reclining sandstone elephants that support a pagoda roof made of red wood, golden ornaments and green-glazed bricks. The reconstruction is based on the original building of the same name from 1899, which was destroyed during World War II. Today the gate is one of the landmarks of the Zoological Garden and is a listed building. Wikipedia

The Elephant Gate is one of two main public entrances to the Zoological Garden in Berlin. It is located on Budapest Street in the Tiergarten district of the Mitte district in close proximity to the Zoo Aquarium. Built from 1983 to 1984 in East Asian style, the gate gets its name from two life-size reclining elephants made of sandstone, which support a pagoda roof made of red wood, gold ornaments and green-glazed tiles. The reconstruction is based on the original building of the same name from 1899, which was destroyed during the Second World War. Today the gate is one of the landmarks of the zoological garden and is a listed building.
