A historical network of signposts has been preserved in the heath, the unique symbolism of which is very different from today's signposts. To do this, local experts stripped the trees piece by piece, cut symbols and painted them red. This probably first happened in the 12th or 13th century and from this the profession of the forest sign cutter developed. From the official survey documents of Electoral Saxony, which Elector Augustus ordered to be drawn up in the 16th century, a forest symbol emerges that was at the zenith of its development at that time.
