Before the construction of today's church was in Gößnitz a wooden church, which was demolished after its completion. The laying of the cornerstone of St. Anne's Church took place on 3 May 1491, the inauguration on 27 December 1494. It was built in the form of a Greek cross in the style of late Gothic sandstone above the wooden church. Parts of the stone tower are still from this. The tower was raised in 1614 by about 20 m to a height of 32 m by the Altenburg master builder and stonemason Wolf Rieth.
