Access to Maeshowe Chambered Cairn is by guided tour only, book ahead if you intend to visit!
From about the end of November to the middle of January, the setting sun aligns with the central chamber of the cairn, if you wish to catch this, book for the 2pm tour (and also make a reservation for good weather).

komoot.com/de-de/highlight/5186041Maeshowe (or Maes Howe; in Old Norse: Orkhaugr) is a Neolithic chambered cairn and passage grave. It was probably built around 2800 BC. This type of chambered cairn is limited to Orkney.Maeshowe is one of the largest tombs in Orkney; the mound encasing the tomb is 35 m in diameter and rises to a height of 7.3 m. Surrounding the mound, at a distance of 15 to 21 m is a ditch up to 14 m wide. The roof was built of carefully crafted slabs of flagstone weighing up to 30 tons. It is aligned so that the rear wall of its central chamber is illuminated on the winter solstice. A similar display occurs in Newgrange. The entrance passage is 11 m long and is only about 0.91 m high, requiring visitors to stoop or crawl into the central chamber.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maeshowe
