As early as the 12th century, Mastholte has a chapel that was supplied by Wadersloh and dedicated to Antonius the Hermit. In 1537 the County of Rietberg became Protestant. 1601 Count Johann III. again to the Catholic faith. When the chapel became dilapidated around 1650, the counts decided to build a new church on the site of the farming community and later community of Moese. Construction began in 1653, and the first service was celebrated in 1656. In 1658 the church was consecrated by the bishop of Osnabrück. Initially, only the ground floor was built from the adjoining tower. In 1663 they thought about increasing the foundation walls. In 1691 the tower was completed. Three Gothic windows from the old Mastholt chapel, which were demolished in 1673, were built into the walls.

The bells of the church were cast in 1690.

In 1857 the flat wooden ceiling of the hall was replaced by a vault.
The aisle was added in 1905

At the beginning of the 20th century, the parish church was too small for the congregation, and in 1905 an aisle was added. A second aisle was planned but was not built because of the First World War.

During this war in 1917 the bells of the St. Jakobus parish were confiscated and melted down. In 1920 new bells were purchased, which were consecrated in March 1921. Two of these bells were also confiscated during World War II and processed into ammunition. In 1949 new bells were ordered again. One of the bells from 1921 is still preserved. A chapel for the fallen was set up on the ground floor of the tower between 1946 and 1949.
