If you have spikes great if not in Autumn it I'd still possible but any later in winter best to return the way you came.

The undulating, almost quilt like feature ahead is your direction of travel...aim for the right hand side of this and you will find yourself heading out of the snowline in time to see the trodden route turn steeply downward
