The "Catharinen Kerk", first mentioned in 1319, was once located on a plateau high above the coast on the southern Eckernförde Bay, visible from afar. Around the year 1737 the sacred building was demolished and gradually the knowledge of the exact location was lost. It was even feared that the last remnants of the church had disappeared in the floods of the Baltic Sea.
