The way over the lock takes you from Germany to Austria.
But be careful: you have to climb a stairwell with 40 steps on each side. A simple pushing aid for bicycles was installed next to the stairs. It's good if you're not traveling alone, otherwise it can get pretty exhausting.

The Jochenstein lock system was built as part of the overall Jochenstein power plant construction project to ensure the continuity of shipping on the Danube.

Location and specifications[edit | edit source]
The chambers of the double lock are located at Danube kilometer 2203.2 and both have a usable length of 227 m and a usable width of 24 m. Construction of the north lock began first in 1954 and then the south lock in 1955. The lock system is located entirely on the German territory of the municipality of Untergriesbach.

The drop height of the lock is 10.34 m. The expansion target at the associated weir of the Jochenstein power plant is 290.0 m above sea level. The two lock chambers are operated by personnel on site at the lock.

The closures of the two lock chambers are designed differently. The upper main breech of the southern chamber is a lifting sinker with double hook gates. A lifting gate was installed in the northern chamber with the jamb raised. The sub-main locks of both chambers are bolt mortise gates with vents for emptying the chamber. The chambers are also filled directly via the closure by lifting the lower panel.

Here you can see the Danube ships entering the lock and in the house on the river there are refreshing sodas. In the hiteren part it has an exhibition about the straw production.
