Archaeological excavations and research show traces of a castle from 1192. It was destroyed in 1430 by the Hussites. Later, a late Gothic-Renaissance palace was built, which was badly damaged during the Thirty Years' War.The Planitz Castle in its current appearance dates from around 1700 to 1720. It was built in the Baroque style by von Arnims as a four-winged complex. After the Planitzer line of the vonArnims had expired, the castle was sold to the Planitzer Sparkasse. From 1935 the city of Planitz rented it as the town hall. Later it served as a military hospital, Soviet military headquarters, mining hostel, barracks and police school. Since it was acquired by the city in 1993, it has provided space for the Clara-Wieck-Gymnasium.It is one of only three educational institutions in the Free State of Saxony that have a special artistic profile.
