Vaulted Fields: Witnesses to Past Agricultural Use
In the Sacred Grove, parts of the heathland were also temporarily used as fields. With the reversible plow commonly used at the time, the clods could only be turned to one side during plowing. They were always tilted toward the center of the field, which thereby became increasingly raised. Wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt, and millet, as well as beans, flax, and poppy, were grown on these so-called vaulted fields. Their remnants can be seen today in the heath and forest as wave-like formations with "hills" and "valleys."
