The name Espelette originates from the Basque Ezpeleta and is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the Nive valley. The town is located approx. 10 km from the Spanish border.
Espelette is famous for its aromatic Capsicum chili variety, which has been grown here since the 17th century. The chili is also better known by the name "Piment d´Espelette". On the typical Basque houses, chili peppers often hang from the front, with the harvest beginning in August.
A stroll through the shops with their diverse spice offerings, as well as cafes and restaurants, offers a varied selection.
