The originality of the bronze group of figures of the piglet farmer with five piglets, which stands on the market square at the old district court, makes many a viewer smile. Children on the neighboring playground really enjoy the three piglets, which are installed at ground level and invite them to sit up. One scratches his ear with pleasure, the other sniffs the ground, while the third gazes curiously at the hustle and bustle of the marketplace.
On the arm of the strong piglet farmer with knee-length trousers, sturdy shoes, a loosely tied shirt bow and a peaked cap are two more little pigs, which he seems to be promoting to the surrounding people with a big gesture. The farmer, with his cheeky snub nose and sly grin, looks like a rogue who definitely knows how to make money. But to whom does he want to sell his piglets? The significance of the group of figures becomes clear against the historical background: “From 1898 to 1986 the two-week piglet market in Groß-Gerau was a big, well-known event. Market vendors and buyers from all over southern Hesse were drawn to the city," explains Jürgen Volkmann from the city museum. While we are familiar with the weekly market today with freshly harvested goods from farmers in the region, cackling poultry and grunting piglets have long since disappeared from the market hustle and bustle. “The farmers came to the piglet market with tractors and farm wagons to sell some of their piglets – there are eight to twelve per litter – as fattening cattle. They could save themselves the effort of raising piglets in separate stables with the mother sow,” explains Volkmann. For self-sufficiency, gardening and fattening were common everywhere - this only changed with growing prosperity and shopping in supermarkets - and the piglet market also disappeared.
The sculptor Kurt Grabert (1922-1999) created the sculpture, it was erected in 1995, largely financed by a monetary gift from the state to Groß-Gerau, which was Hessentagstadt in 1994. Initially, the piglet farmer had his place to the right of the town hall, but with the redesign of the city center he moved to the old district court.

Bronze figure of a piglet farmer with 5 piglets. The figure points to the prosperity of the district town based on agriculture. The figures should be viewed in peace. Many small details can be seen, e.g. the piglet in the middle below is scratching its head with a hind leg.
