Adolf Kolping, Catholic priest and social reformer. Kolping lived from 1813 to 1865 and was one of the few people from church circles who saw the misery of the workers early on.
Initially a shoemaker, he later became a priest and in 1846 founded the Catholic Journeymen's Association. He fought for cities to have their own dormitories for single workers. By 1865, 420 clubs with around 60,000 members had been set up throughout Germany.
