The Renaissance building is a three-wing complex with four corner towers from the mid-16th century and remains of an enclosing wall.

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1062 in connection with the royal court in Forchheim. The Lords of Wiesenthau have been documented as Bamberg ministerials since 1128. It is not clear whether a castle already existed at that time. It was first mentioned in a document in 1379.

Originally the freehold of the Lords of Wiesenthau, part of the castle was sold to the Bishopric of Bamberg on June 25, 1379. In the following period it came entirely under Bamberg feudal sovereignty. The Lords of Wiesenthau remained in possession of the castle as Bamberg feudal lords.

In 1430 the castle was badly damaged by the Hussites. Further destruction occurred in the Peasants' War in 1525. It was fundamentally rebuilt in 1566. Apart from a short period, the complex, or at least part of it, was always owned by this family until the Lords of Wiesenthau died out in 1814.

After extensive renovation between 1985 and 1992, the complex was restored to its original condition.
