Like many buildings in Rieth, the dairy, built in 1898, has had an eventful history until it was finally acquired by us in 1998 a hundred years later and lovingly restored.

The dairy was built by Ferdinand Krüger from the Herrnhof Vorwerk. It was operated as a "steam dairy" and its catchment area, in addition to Rieth and the Riether Werder, also included Wahrlang, Mützelburg, Ludwigshof and Ahlbeck.

In 1917 electrical power was introduced in Rieth with the installation of an alternator powered by the dairy steam engine. In the following years the owners changed more often. The last Riether dairy owner was Paul Wrook.

In addition to fine German branded butter and quark, the dairy also produced Limburg cheese, Romadur, layered and Harz cheese and later also Camembert. This was probably sold under the name "Riether Junge" based on the famous "Stolper Jungchen".

In 1943 the chimney of the former steam engine, which protruded approx. 8 m above the roof, was demolished on the orders of the Pomeranian Gauleitung. This high point could have served the Allied bomb pilots as a landmark for the approach to Peenemünde.

After the dairy was closed, it was sold to Grete Sass, née Krüger, who used the house as a residential building. Many families were quartered there after the war. The Sass couple gave practical lessons in sewing and handicrafts. At times the local post office was housed in the house.

The Hofcafe was finally opened in the summer of 2009 and has been a magnet and quiet zone for many guests ever since.

In the middle of Rieth you will find my Hofcafe in the former dairy - a house with an eventful history and lots of charm. 25 seats in my cozy interior and 30 outside seats invite you to linger, enjoy and relax.
