    Grave chapel on the Württemberg

The grave chapel on the Württemberg in the Stuttgart district of Rotenberg is a mausoleum on the summit of the Rotenberg, which was only renamed Württemberg in 1907. King Wilhelm I of Württemberg (1781-1864) had it built after the death of his second wife Catherine Pavlovna (1788-1819). He himself and their daughter Marie Friederike Charlotte von Württemberg (1816-1887) are also buried there.

The building was erected between 1820 and 1824 according to a design by the court architect Giovanni Salucci, after Wirtemberg Castle, which had fallen into ruin and was the ancestral seat of the House of Württemberg, had been demolished. The dedication stone of the original castle chapel is located as a spolia in the burial chapel. It states that Bishop Adalbert II of Worms consecrated the castle chapel on February 7, 1083. The stone is the earliest documentary evidence of the ruling house of Württemberg.[1]

The burial chapel served as a Russian Orthodox church from 1825 to 1899. Even today, a Russian Orthodox service is held every year on Whit Monday.
