Entrepreneur and politician of the 19th century Italian, Ignazio Florio is a crucial figure for Favignana, Palermo and the whole of Sicily. In 1876, he built an innovative canning factory in the tonnara of Favignana and was appointed senator of the newborn Kingdom of Italy. He contributed significantly to the economic development of the island of Favignana, making his family one of the most important in Sicily.

Monument in memory of Ignazio Florio, the man who in 1874 bought the entire Aegadian Archipelago, including the largest of them - Favignana. He developed a large-scale "tuna business" there, catching fish and building a large canning factory at the same time. He contributed not only to the development of fisheries in Sicily, but also significantly developed the island's textile, fertilizer and ceramics industries, thus increasing the standard of living of the inhabitants.
