The calvary is located facing the sea. Access to the terrace is free, with a panorama of the Aa channel and its jetties. On August 15, a procession stops there for the traditional blessing of the sea.

Here is the text of the commemorative plaque affixed to this Calvary:

“On September 7, 1947 his Eminence Cardinal Lienart Bishop of Lille inaugurated and solemnly blessed this Calvary of the Sailors and this Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes erected by public subscription by the piety of the inhabitants of Grand-Fort-Philippe in memory of their dead and in recognition of the protection of their patroness Our Lady of Grace during the 1939-1944 war.

Calvary built in 1947 on the edge of the channel of Grand-Fort-Philippe near Gravelines for the protection of fishermen and the memory of the missing at sea.

The Calvary is located on the seafront and has a terrace with panoramic views of the Aa Channel and its jetties. A grotto of Lourdes is integrated into the monument.

Every year on the 15th of August the traditional procession of the boats stops after the parade on the streets to bless the sea.

The inhabitants of Grand-Fort-Philippe, and particularly the families of sailors, financed the construction of this monument in memory of their dead and in recognition of the protection of their patroness, Notre-Dame de Grace, during the Second World War.

In May and June 1940, for fear of the German invasion, many Grand-Fort-Philippois piled into fishing boats to take refuge in Normandy or Brittany. Despite enemy fire, no casualties were reported. Following this "miracle", the inhabitants promised to erect a Sailors' Calvary at the end of the war.
