In the restored plague house, infected and doomed villagers were isolated to prevent the spread of the disease. However, also look at the more modern building where preparations are made and where you will find an overview of tinctures and the like. During a walk through the herb garden you will also have beautiful views of the church and you will pass a statue of Mary and the plague house (near the wall at the back). Why did the abbey start with herbs? Quote: "Postel Abbey started growing herbs in September 1994. The main goal was to grow herbs in an environmentally friendly way. First of all, the cultivation of ginseng was considered. After all, ginseng cultivation has several advantages for the environment. : no use is made of liquid manure, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, etc.

Just like plague houses in beguinages, other abbeys and cities, people with a highly contagious disease were quarantined here. And in the past it was often referred to as the "black death", but certainly not only that. The restored plague house dates from the 17th century, as the information board says.
